Eve pvp when you can arrange it is the best out there anywhere. Unfortunately, in 0.0 you can look forward to banding together with a hundred of your guys to fight hundred of the enemy. Then you can look forward to your screen freezing. And when it finally unfreezes, you can watch your pod being blown apart.
There's no question that large fleet battles (100+ ships) often go poorly. But I've been in plenty of fights with 50 ships or so between the two sides that had little to no lag -- nothing that go in the way of the outcome of the fight. Empire fighting verses anyone has one particularly significant problem - the tendency to run for an outpost and dock.
My problem with Privateers and the empire waring in general is the dirty pool that's played. How many people have been ganked while in a black screen undocking from a station? How many have been bumped by a neutral-alt who's in cahoots with Privateers? I've watched Privateers take a BS down to structure while undocking and then actually crow about how they pwned the guy (who did warp off once he loaded in). Huh?
I'm not saying that all Privateers are amoral asshats, because that's not the point. The point is they're not about PvP, they're about clubbing baby seals, shooting fish in a barrel. It's not about PvP, it's about ganking people. There's something deeply unsatisfying about that approach to PvP for someone who's actually interested in the experience of fighting another player in a game community. That's supposed to be better than doing it against AI. But the Privateer experience, generally, has reduced PvP in this game to something far less satisfying. The premise that this is somehow an evolution in fleet combat is, frankly, asinine. There's nothing about fleet combat in what's going on in these empire wars.
You can sit there and try to put lipstick on this pig, but at the end of the day it's still a pig.
